About Open Oculus

Hi all, and welcome to Open Oculus.  I named it thus because this blog is an open space for the visual (an oculus is an eye, or a hole in the top of the Pantheon’s dome) as well as the verbal.  Please comment.  I love to know what everyone thinks.  As mentioned, I’m a library and information science student at the University of Washington.  And yes, I love photography, sci fi and satire.  Below is a short list of favorites for the genres.  I’ve left many out.  Comment if you want more, but those are some personal Gods of mine, wielding much influence on the evolution of my mindscape and on the referneces in this blog.

Photography:

  • Imogen Cunningham
  • Cindy Sherman
  • Annie Leibovitz
  • Robert Frank
  • Diane Arbus

Sci FI/Fantasy:

  • William Gibson
  • Frank Herbert
  • Neal Stephenson
  • Janny Wurts and Raymond Feist
  • J.R.R Tolkien

Satire

  • Lynda Barry
  • Berkeley Breathed
  • Douglas Adams
  • Matt Groening
  • Scott Adams

Heavily influenced by the above, here is the bulk of the Open Oculus content:

From September 2008 to December 2008, I’ll be enrolled in a University of Washington course called The Usable Library.  This blog is written in response to questions posed by librarian and professor, Aaron Schmidt.  In mid November, I will also post a research project for my History of Recorded Information course.  After December 2008, I will go on a month long break from school, then return in January for my final winter quarter.

After I graduate, this blog will evolve into a space with more emphasis on the visual, less on the verbal.  More photography.  Coming Soon.
